If desired results are achieved and resedation occurs (expected), no more than 1 mg given in 0.5-mg increments may be given in any 20-minute period and no more than a cumulative total dose of 3 mg in any 1 hour.

If patient has not responded to a cumulative dose of 5 mg within 5 minutes, benzodiazepines are not the major cause of sedation discontinue use. If a partial response is achieved with 3 mg, continue dosing in 0.5-mg increments until awakening or a cumulative dose of 5 mg is reached (rarely required). Assess level of consciousness between each dose until desired level of consciousness achieved or a total cumulative dose of 3 mg (30 mL) has been given (average dose to awakening is 1 mg to 3 mg). If results are still inadequate, 0.5 mg (5 mL) may be repeated at 1-minute intervals. If results inadequate, give an additional dose of 0.3 mg (3 mL) in 1 minute.
